Batata ( Potato ) Song

Batata ( potato ) Song

A very easy and tasty side dish with Dosa / Rotis ( without coconut paste ) in Konkani Cuisine

Serves: 4

You will need

1 tablespoon oil
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 spring curry leaves
5 potatoes, medium size
4 -5 onions, medium size, finely chopped
2 teaspoon red chilli powder ( dilute red chilli powder in 1 tablespoon water ) or Kashmiri red chilli powder
3/4 teaspoon salt ( or to taste )
2 teaspoon tamarind paste or 1/4 cup tamarind juice
1/2 cup ( 50 - 75 ml ) water

Method

Boil potatoes, peel and cut into medium size and keep aside.

Heat oil in a frying pan / kadai. Add mustard seeds. When they begin to crackle, add curry leaves and saute for 2 minutes.

Add chopped onion and fry for 5 - 7 minutes or till fragrant and golden brown in color.

Add diluted red chilli powder and stir well for 2 -3 minutes or till onion - red chilli mixture thickens and water dries up.

Add boiled potato cubes, salt to taste and tamarind paste / juice. Mix all the ingredients well.

Add extra 1/2 cup water ( 1/2 to 3/4 cup ). Cover with a lid and cook on a low to medium heat for 15 minutes or until the gravy thickens and bright red in color.

Serve as a side dish with Rotis / Dosa ( Polo ).

Kitchen Tip:

Add 1/2 teaspoon turmeric ( haldi ) powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt when boiling potatoes. Potatoes will cook very fast and peel off the skin very easily .
