Dal Shorba

A very tasty lentil soup in Indian Cuisine !!!

Serves: 4

You will need

For dal:

30 g (2 tablespoons tur dal)

30 g (2 tablespoons masoor dal)

30 g (2 tablespoons) moong dal

3 cups of water

1 tomato, roughly chopped

1 onion, roughly chopped

¼ teaspoon turmeric powder

½ teaspoon oil

Method

Wash dals and soak with 3 cups of water in a pressure cooker for half an hour. Finally add turmeric powder, chopped tomato, chopped onion and oil. Close the lid and pressure cook for 20 minutes (Pressure cook on high heat till 3 whistles and reduce the heat to low and cook for 15 minutes). Allow the cooker to cool naturally. Open the lid and gently mash cooked dal.

Other ingredients

½ teaspoon red chilli powder

¼ teaspoon pepper powder

½ teaspoon coriander powder

½ teaspoon jeera powder (cumin seed powder)

½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)

1 tablespoon finely chopped coriander leaves (including stem)

1 tablespoon finely chopped mint leaves

Extra 1 cup (200 ml) water

1 teaspoon chopped coriander leaves

Final preparation:

Dilute red chilli powder, pepper powder, coriander powder and jeera powder in 2 tablespoons of water and make a smooth solution (spice mix)

Add diluted spice mix,chopped mint and coriander leaves, salt to taste and extra 1 cup water into the cooked dal. Mix all the ingredients well. Cover wih a lid and cook on a low to medium heat for 10 – 12 minutes until slightly thickens and creamy. Sprinkle chopped coriander leaves and serve hot as a soup (also goes well with phulkas and rice).
